A Delicious Lower Carb Honey Mustard Substitute

Updated: Jan 29

a small blue glass dish containing a serving of honey mustard dipping sauce

Many people enjoy honey mustard for its balanced combination of sweet and tangy flavors. Its versatility makes it a popular condiment and dipping sauce for various dishes, including salads, sandwiches, burgers, wings and more. The sweetness from honey and the tanginess from mustard create a flavorful harmony that enhances the overall taste of the dishes it accompanies. However, let us be honest with each other, this sauce elevates fast casual dishes like french fries and chicken tenders or nuggets.

While a teaspoon of honey contains around 6 carbohydrates, opting for Splenda Brown Sugar with only 4 carbohydrates per teaspoon offers a lower-carb alternative. This substitution allows you to enjoy the sweet, caramel notes without compromising on your dietary preferences, making it an excellent choice for those aiming to reduce their carbohydrate intake. That is per teaspoon, but again let us be honest with each other, I am not eating only one teaspoon of honey's worth of it unless that is all of it that is left. Honey mustard nearly demands to be consumed in quarter cup increments.

Description

In this honey mustard substitute recipe, Splenda brown sugar takes the place of honey. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this imitation honey mustard does an excellent job mimicking commercially produced honey mustard. However, those familiar with the taste of homemade honey mustard might notice subtle differences between the two.

This low-carb honey mustard alternative swaps honey for Splenda brown sugar as the sweetener. Ideal for dipping, salads, or brushing over grilled meats, this single-serve recipe can be easily scaled up for larger quantities. I find this portion size helps curb my tendency to consume excessive amounts when making chicken tenders. While lower in carbs, it's not carb-free, allowing me to indulge in honey mustard cravings without the need for additional insulin injections.

Instructions- Lower Carb Honey Mustard Substitute

arranged on a towel lined counter is all of the tools and ingredients needed to make a brown sugar based faux honey mustard dipping sauce. There is brown sugar, mustard, water, a whisk, a small bowl, measuring spoons

Feel free to prepare this recipe directly in the dipping container you intend to use. I personally love using this sauce for dipping chicken tenders and nuggets. However, you could use it with grilled chicken, wings, fish and chips, the sky is the limit!

Combine 5ml of water and 1 tsp of Splenda brown sugar in a small bowl or container. Whisk or mix thoroughly to ensure proper dissolution. If not dissolved correctly, the brown sugar may impart a sandy or gritty texture. This initial step is crucial for melting the brown sugar, allowing its flavor to seamlessly integrate into the mustard without introducing unwanted texture. Since the mustard may lack sufficient moisture on its own for this process, the additional water facilitates effective incorporation.

It really is that simple. Just enough water to help the brown sugar dissolve so the sauce does have a sandy texture full of grit and mustard. That's it. If your tastes lean towards commercial honey mustard sauces this should seamlessly blend into the crowd, and even those of us who can discern homemade sauce with real honey shouldn't be turned off by it. It tastes delicious but be honest that this is a honeyless honey mustard and we are cutting carbs not trying to sneak one past the goalie. Plus, with only three naturally gluten free ingredients in this recipe, that means that unless you substitute an ingredient that does have it, it is also gluten free.
